Wizards releases a book titled:

Revised Dungeons & Dragons

The book combines both the Player's Handbook and DMG into one book (plus very minor rule fixing and making Eberron Canon). The fifteen Revised monster books are optional and separate. Fans clamor for the revised edition, while gronards post anoymously on message boards, "3.75 edition, blah! It's the end of days people. Players shouldn't read the DMG."

Meanwhile Wizards slaves away at 4th edition which is released in 3 books with no default setting assumed.

I call it "New COKE" (or Crystal Pepsi) strategy.
