By the way Nookie, I was going to ask a mod to move this thread back to Creature Catalog Homebrews were it originated.

It doesn't really belong in the 5E forum!

Hailing from oriental lands the fox dragon is a mischievous trickster that lives in the forested areas of the far east. The creature spends its days flitting about wildly seeking to teach strangers through its chaotic pranks usually in the form of fire based antics.

Fox dragon familiars: The fox dragon is suitable for a 5th level improved familiar.

I think we can do without the "oriental lands" and "far east" bits since they assume a location for the reader that may not apply.

I guess making them 5th level improved familiars makes sense. Pseudodragons are 7th level familiars, but they have formidable spell resistance and a nasty poison.

We'll need dimensions, weight and languages for them.

Hows about:

The fox dragon is a mischievous trickster that lives in forested areas. The creature spends its days flitting about wildly seeking to teach strangers through its chaotic pranks usually in the form of fire based antics.

A foxdragon is about 3 feet long, half of which is its bushy tail. It weighs about 5 pounds.

Foxdragons can speak Draconic and Sylvan.

Updating the Foxdragon Working Draft.

Looks like we're done.

Assuming we don't bother adding a "Companions" entry to mimic the "Pseudodragon Companions" in the MM:

PSEUDODRAGON COMPANIONS

A pseudodragon may very rarely seek humanoid companionship. It stalks a candidate silently for days, reading his or her thoughts and judging his or her deeds. If it finds the candidate promising, the pseudodragon presents itself as a potential companion and observes the other’s reaction. If the candidate seems delighted and promises to take very good care of it, the pseudodragon accepts. Otherwise, it flies away.

A pseudodragon’s personality has been described as catlike. At times the creature seems arrogant, demanding, and less than helpful. It is willing to serve—provided that it is well fed and groomed, and receives lots of attention. The companion must pamper it and make it feel like the most important thing in his or her life. If the pseudodragon is mistreated or insulted, it will leave—or worse, play pranks when least expected. Pseudodragons particularly dislike cruelty and will not serve cruel masters.

A pseudodragon egg can fetch a price of up to 10,000 gp, and a hatchling as much as 20,000 gp. Pseudodragons have a life span of 10 to 15 years. Like dragons, they are attracted to bright, shiny objects.

Something like that would be fun. Maybe the foxdragon pranks the person and they seem to be a good natured sport about being the butt of the dragon jokes a fox dragon may grow to like the person ans seek out companionship.

Okay then, how about this:

FOXDRAGON COMPANIONS
On very rare occasions a foxdragon while accept the companionship of a humanoid. These tricksters will only become companions to "kindred spirits" who love pranks and jokes as much as foxdragons do. If they come across a potential companion they test them out by playing a series of tricks on them, and if the candidate receives them good-naturedly (possibly by responding in kind with their own harmless tricks) the foxdragon may accept them. Foxdragons also love edible treats such as sweets, fruits and juicy scraps of meat, so offering a supply of such delicacies is a good way for a candidate to convince the foxdragon to accept them.

A foxdragon companion values its freedom and is liable to fly away if it feels its "ally" is too controlling or has lost their fondness for pranks. They do not demand constant pampering like a pseudodragon, but their companion needs to maintain a regular supply of delicious titbits to keep their foxdragon ally.

I suppose we'd better include the price info like the pseudodragon had. Since they're less powerful we'd better cut the cost a bit. Maybe:

A foxdragon egg can fetch a price of up to 6,000 gp, and a hatchling as much as 12,000 gp. Foxdragons have a life span of 10 to 15 years. Like dragons, they are attracted to bright, shiny objects.

Looks great to me. Any word on weather the monster homebrew section will come back?
