  • Descent into Avernus
Avernus is the first layer of the Nine Hells, and is the campaign setting for the D&D 5E hardcover adventure, Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. The Nine Hells are a lawful evil aligned outer plane populated by devils. Avernus is also the name of a volcanic crater in Italy, which was believed to be the entrance to the underworld. As such, Avernus is considered the 'entrance' to the Nine Hells.

Avernus is ruled by Zariel, a fallen angel, who supplanted the previous ruler, Bel. It is also the plane on which Tiamat is imprisoned.
