I vaguely remember two (iirc) versions of Archon on my C64.

I’ll admit to my ignorance of Arena, but I thought that it is super popular. Isn’t it?

Fairly so I guess. It was moreso my trying to avoid pondering a grand IP/system unification.

Bad blood since the OGL, and a lot of folks discovered that negativity gets them moneybfromnthebYouTube algorithm.

Mostly this, I think. Even publishers and commentators I like and respect have been pretty clearly burned by the OGL debacle; lots of their comments on YouTube and Twitch as they try to transition away from the OGL have strong "My ex wasn't that hot anyway" energy.

Archon was more of a traditional chess board, and Archon II: Adept was more summon-focused with some elemental themes as well.

It uses standard issue cynical monetization and taking advantage of addictive behaviors. Sundaes paper Magic, but Arena gives it some steroids.
