D&D (2024) New D&D Edition's Player’s Handbook Cover Reveal

Game Informer has revealed the cover to the 2024 Player’s Handbook.

Game Informer has revealed the cover to the 2024 Player’s Handbook.

The cover features a gold dragon behind the old-school D&D characters Strongheart the paladin, Mercion the cleric, Elkhorn the dwarf fighter, and Molliver the thief. Ringlerun the wizard is absent (then again he got his showcase on one of the 1E AD&D Player's Handbooks), but a drow mage appears to have joined the party!

The Chromatics are clear and good for me: they each have a distinct villain niche and lair possibility. The lower metalics are just confusing.
I'm not the biggest 4e fan, but I did appreciate the attempts to update the setting and creature lore. Reshuffling the lesser metallics to be Copper, Iron, and Adamantine wasn't a terrible idea. It's a shame it got walked back, but a lot of 4e babies got thrown out with the bathwater.

It was too late by 2008 to really change.

Both have that ultra clean, processed uncanny Valley vibe imho.

I think this is digital from almost 20 years ago. Doesn't look so processed.
I want to play the "Uncanny Valley" TTRPG. I figured that someone must have done this but I'll I could find was a survival-horror video game.

I'm thinking more like a rules-light, beer and pretzels take on Blade Runner, West World, or The Body Snatchers. For now, I think I will settle on a session of InSPECTREs.

You know why
Actually, I am pretty oblivious. But based on recent discussions, its code or a dog whistle of sorts. It is kinda nice to be falling behind in modern slang, but I need to be careful before I start sounding like my grandfather telling people to put on their rubbers because it's muddy outside.

Yeah but you are wrong.

Well I'm not a fan of digital art in general generic digital art that resembles art less so. Ie seen better AI art than these.

Same artist did the 2014 books Acerak, Beholder and King Snurre are a bit more distinctive that a gold dragon (not D&D exclusive) and some adventurers posing?

Even if it's not AI art it's now a very common style.

Or take the same group of people but them around a campfire and have one of them pose on a dead dragon. Makes sense to d tgat at least of you've defeated it no MCU comparisons required.

It's not bad at least but it's not exciting or interesting imho. 5E starter sets and 2014 are better imho.

Action scenes ad posing don't age well. Anyone care about the 1989 or 1995 or 4E phb covers that much now?

1E statue ones iconic, 3E is distinctive at least.

Generic digital art that resembles art?

Are you seriously trying to say it isn't real art if it isn't done on a physical piece of paper/canvas?

It is DnD's golden anniversary, so they are putting DnD Gold Dragons on the cover. They aren't trying to be DnD Exclusive do not steal original character TM.

And frankly, I didn't know it was Acerak on the DMG for a LONG time, same with whoever King Snurre is. Not like "undead wizard" and "giant wearing animal skin" are DnD Exclusives either. Again, I'm fine with people not liking the art, but your attacks on it don't even make sense.

Oh no. How terrible.

MCU comparisons are not required AT ALL. Marvel did not get to trademark poses! Why do you think it is suddenly required for every pose, except posing with a corpse I guess, needs to be compared to marvel?

Is this 1991 art from TSR Marvel as well?

Yes, I do still care about the 4e covers. Good art doesn't age that poorly. Being an "action scene ad posing" doesn't change that.

It's not MCU because it doesn't look like a CGI heavy paused scene from a movie. It's not really a good piece as such imho.

Note I'm not a fan of stupid poses for no reason. Clever artist could make it work better. Eg posing for a spellcaster using Mage hand/magic to paint them.
