In the exact way they do now? Not necessarily.

But the idea of a "tangible morality" is part of the fantasy underpinnings of D&D. Pure creatures that are repulsed by the corrupt, a sword that can only be wielded by the wicked, these are elements of fantasy that translate the nature of one's character to something that matters in the magical metasetting of a typical D&D world.

I do think that law and chaos need better explained. I already have a definition for them that seems to remove most questions and conundrums that seems to work in my game.
