FISH FEUD! Chase P. Salmon, society writer DAUNTON--A boat full of bream begets a broken betrothal! And Josiah Sturgeon, Daunton's most successful seafood wholesaler, is not happy about it. Sturgeon's niece, the beauteous Edith, had been engaged to Donald Hake, son of Lucius Hake, the city's second-most successful seafood wholesaler. But now it looks like the fish-selling monopoly is off, as the Hake family cancelled the wedding, two months before the happy occasion. It's all part of a feud that's been growing between the two ever since Sturgeon beat Hake to the punch, cornering the market on cod a year ago. The long-standing betrothal, contracted when the putative happy couple were eight and six respectively, is the latest casualty in this war. "I've done nothing," Sturgeon proclaims, but our sources say otherwise! It seems that Obadiah Tunny, owner of Tunny's Trawlers, has agreed to use Sturgeon as his sole distributor. A crafty move on the part of Mr. S. But has it backfired? So far Sturgeon has expressed no regrets at the breaking of the engagement. So it looks like the wedding--the social event of the season for Daunton's merchants--is off. Some say there's still a chance, but with only two months to go, can the two fishy families mend their fences? Mr. Hake could not be reached for comment.
