I'm not sure what you're trying to argue here. Going back it really looks like like you and @Maxperson are fundamentally on the same side here - that which says that canon shouldn't change too much. The real work for a DM running a published setting is if that setting changes. If the setting is fairly static, not only have you got less to "memorize" (or more realistically, know how to look up), but you don't have to track any changes or have multiple setting books or the like. @Maxperson is arguing canon changes shouldn't be frequent and shouldn't be secret or hidden away in specific books. That aligns perfectly with your position that it's best if the DM knows more about the setting than the players. Also, if we're going to be real, some players like you (or me) will just almost certainly know more about certain settings than the DM. I mean your example with the moon I presume is hyperbole because if not, oh dear - I do think it's fair to want a DM to memorize basics about a setting like that. Especially as most fantasy settings seem to have some silly nonsense going on with their moons or other orbiting bodies! EDIT - I will definitely say I prefer, if I'm paying for a published setting, that it's a relatively static one, because then I can really use it and dig into it. Whereas if adventures and so on are constantly updating it, whilst that's kind of fun in a sort of '90s way, I think it's less usable. Adding to something is different from updating, of course.
