[QUOTE="Chaosmancer, post: 9201741, member: 6801228"] Since when is a 12 a dump stat? Show me the rule where DCs change based on time and danger. This is the problem, you are hyper-fixating on the fact that I was an idiot who thought giving concrete examples would be of any use, and you can't get past the idea of craftspeople. But the DCs don't change. It doesn't matter if there is time pressure or not. A PC as good as they can possibly be at levels 1 - 3 has a 60% chance of success with one or two skills at DC 15. For EVERY OTHER SKILL they are looking at between a 25% chance of success and 45% chance of success. This means that for most PCs on most skills, they will fail the majority of the time. Yes, I understand that if they can use passive scores and have advantage and get guidance and use Flash of Genius and spin around three times quacking like a duck that they can improve those odds. But you can't expect that for every PC on every skill check. And yes, I understand that there are PCs who specialize in different skills, and this can be a good thing, but since not ability scores and not all skills are created equally this leads to disparities in the ability of PCs to meaningfully interact with the skill system to succeed at tasks in the campaign. Because while a tailor can have their magical loom and faerie assistants and their gloves of never failing to make a stitch, when the PC needs to make that DC 15 check to save their fiance from certain death, they don't get those things. And since they don't get those things, it then becomes less fun and more utterly dreadful when this important check comes up, and their best course of action is to ask another party member to make the roll instead, because it is too important for them to roll and screw it up.
