The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

I worked on a project once with some British colleagues. Part of it involved publishing a white paper on a short deadline. The style manual we had to follow said that we had to use the online Oxford Dictionary set to British English. If more than one spelling is given in the dictionary, we were...

It breaks English spelling and pronunciation conventions. Should we now pronounce it em-ale. We don't say ee-masculate. It is also inconsistent. Why not write "xray" then? But the battle was lost for me when one of the last holdouts, the Chicago Manual of Style, embraced "email" in the 17th...

D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

Egyption priests plucked every hair from their body, including eye lashes. Muslims were/are exhorted to shave or pluck armpit and pubic hair. Just like today, body hair removal was practiced in many cultures in the ancient world, but not all. I once went down a rabbit hole of cultural...

So, you are saying its male? ;-)

D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

I assume that it would be like a bearded dragon IRL. If exposed to high temperatures while in the egg, it becomes a reproducing female, even though genetically a male. But I better be careful. I don't want the artist or his fans to be mad at me for misinterpreting his intent.

Try to give folks the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps the writer means that you made him the most curious he can possibly be? "When Alice saw a rabbit with a pocket watch it piqued her curiosity. When she heard it talk, it peaked her curiosity."

"All intensive purposes" "less items" "supposably" "email" typing two spaces after a period on computer using a variable-width font "he made a gaff" (Really? Is he in the SCA?) and on... Thinking about examples of this bring to mind two truths: 1. I can feel rightful indignation over seeing...

Some people need to learn when to stop digging. I've got the red-text treatment once or twice. And the proper reaction is to go "oops" and move on, maybe stop following that thread. But some people seem compelled to sea lion about it or treat a situation involving social etiquette like a point...

The Ethics of Two Way Ignore

I'm actually surprised it isn't more. A lit ray of optimism about humanity! I think when you have a strong culture, with clear rules, and active moderation, people start policing themselves or move on to other places if that are more open to their behavior.

Love those kinds of random tables. I stole a number of my ideas from an old AD&D carousing table. But I'm being careful to avoid results that require me to have the spotlight entirely on one character for a chunk of time or going back and forth between the character who finds himself on a spit...

Another thing I like to do with successes, and I'm rewriting some of the result to support this, is to give a general "you gain intel", "you gain an ally" but let the player explain what it is. You don't always have a great tip or information to share at that specific point in the campaign and...

I like it! I already have the following impressive success: Juicy gossip! An inebriated NPC shares useful information. It can be an NPC and information relevant to a current adventure or goal or a hook for a new adventure. But I like your example being specific to an antagonist. I'm...

How happy are you with your table/group?

I like my dual Transformer table-to-desk tables ... oh wait, wrong conversation. I'm very satisfied with my current group. We've been playing together for 10 years, first in person and now mostly on-line.

Hi all, I'm running a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4e campaign, but this question isn't really specific to the system. For those who are interested with the system-specific mechanical background read the text in the spoiler tag. For everyone else, I just want some ideas of things that could...

Yeah, local anasthesia is freaky. My wife had to have an emergency c-section with my first son. She described being able to feel the tension of her skin being pulled on, especially when they were sewing her back up, but not any pain.

That's annoying. I've seen people do this on airplanes. Like, just go to restroom and do it if you didn't have the foresight to clip your nails before your trip.

Not sure, but that would make sense. "Excreting content for You Tube" seems like a very apt turn of phrase. I knew a lawyer who worked in the compliance department at an engineering firm and his boss told him that his "pretentious" language was turning people off. I find it rich that an...

D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

I think the "being weird" characterization was in reaction to Elmore's original post where he was calling people crazy. He subsequent edited version was toned down a lot and is quite reasonable.
