D&D General No More Baldur's Gate From Larion: Team Is 'Elated'

Team pivoting to next big release instead.

Bad news for Baldur's Gate fans--It seems that Larion is out of the Baldur's Gate business. CEO Swen Vicke has announced that Baldur's Gate 3 is not getting any expansions, DLC, or a sequel. Patches and fixes will still continue, however, including cross-platform mod support.

"Because of all the success the obvious thing would have been to do a DLC, so we started on one. We started even thinking about BG4. But we hadn’t really had closure on BG3 yet and just to jump forward on something new felt wrong. We had also spent a whole bunch of time converting the system into a video game and we wanted to do new things. There are a lot of constraints on making D&D, and 5th Edition is not an easy system to put into a video game. We had all these ideas of new combat we wanted to try out and they were not compatible."
-Swen Vicke

Vicke confirmed this at a talk at the Game Developers Conference, and said that Larion Studios wanted to make its own new content rather than license IP from another company.

He also clarified that a Baldur's Gate 4 was still possible, but that if it happened it would not be made by Larion. Larion is already working on its next big release.

According to IGN, Larion has started work on some BG3 DLC, but it was cancelled.

"You could see the team was doing it because everyone felt like we had to do it, but it wasn’t really coming from the heart, and we’re very much a studio from the heart. It’s what gotten us into misery and it’s also been the reasons for our success."
-Swen Vicke

According to Vicke, when the BG3 team found out that they would not be making more Baldur's Gate content, they were 'elated'.

“I thought they were going to be angry at me because I just couldn’t muster the energy. I saw so many elated faces, which I didn’t expect, and I could tell they shared the same feelings, so we were all aligned with one another. And I’ve had so many developers come to me after and say, ‘Thank god.'"

Well it means someone else can also mess up your game. Eh bugs in DLC breaks your game.

Some studios have farmed out dlc work to others but WotC atm doesn't have the required talent or reputation.

Actually Larian studios did try and farm out a divinity game to another company after DOS2, but for some reason it didn't work out.

So I suspect Swen has no problem with WotC doing a DLC for BG3 and he even said the characters and BG3 itself belongs to WotC. How that happened
I don't know, but I suspect WotC will throw one or more of its studios at it or even start or buy a new one for it, perhaps create a Forgotten Realms studios or Baldur's Gate Studios. Maybe hire some Ex-Larian employees.

I don't think WotC wants to share BG3 now that it has its grubby hands on it.

My take:

- While it's certainly plausible that Larian is walking away from D&D because of something stupid/greedy that WotC did, that's not necessarily true. Larian is a private company, and Vinke has a history of doing what he wants to do - and also, while profit is important to him, that's not the sole or even primary motive for his business moves. Larian could be walking away for reasons that do, do in part, or don't at all have to do with anything WotC did.
There were probably many issues leading Larian to prefer going their own way. But having all the people they had worked with over at Wizards get laid off probably didn't help.

- BG3 is a huge, huge improvement on DoS 1 & 2, and frankly I don't even see how that is in question. And yes, it's because BG3's D&D-based mechanics are WAY better than the mechanics in DoS, and also the writing in BG3 is better, and, thirdly, cinematic dialogue scenes. The fact that Vinke thinks DoS had "better" mechanics than BG3 is worrying.
I, for one, like the mechanics in DoS2 (at least in the Definitive edition – I understand the original version had some issues). I like being able to choose from a number of different combat skills and have them provide different active abilities. I like having cooldowns be the primary balancing factor to those abilities, rather than spell slots or mana. I like how terrain, both in terms of elevation and various surface/cloud effects change things and also interact with your abilities.

Yeah I don't think they actually will roll, though, because the responsibility here is too diffuse. Larian aren't angry with a specific individual but with the way WotC/Hasbro operate, and the people who make the decisions about that are far above being fired, indeed they probably have contracts that amount to, short of gross misconduct, you have to pay out millions to get them to leave.
Is that even a thing?

Those WotC studios that have no experience on AAA games, games in general and have produced essentially nothing?

With no experience, artistic vision, game project management, or game engine available and probably 200 odd million required to do it. That WotC?

A Title Much Cooler Than Anything on the Old Site
I don't need an expansion. BG3 was a great game, and it had an emotionally satisfying ending(s), so I don't really need to pick up at the end and continue with my merry band of adventurers.
I feel exactly the same. I don't even want to replay it, even though I absolutely loved it.

The Witcher games are the same for me.

Skyrim, on the other hand, I replayed many times and bought and played all of the official DLCs. I also played around a lot with mods.
I don't play enough videos games, or read about them enough, to have put my finger on the reasons why Skyrim was so different for me. I think the stories were both generic enough, yet interesting enough that it could still feel fresh when replaying. But it may just have been due to the fact that I handn't played any computer games for a long time, so Skyrim blew me away. I also had more time on my hands when I got into it. It'll be interesting to see whether I play through the next Elder Scroll game more than once.

Archetype Entertainment is a fully owned subsidiary of WotC, founded by BioWare veterans James Ohlen and Drew Karpyshyn, of the Baldur's Gate 2 fame. I can't find stats on how big they are, but they have Certain Affinity as co-developer, so that's 250+ people working on their first title. So at the very least they have experience, artistic vision, and project manage, along with a hefty budget!

Does that mean their next games will be any good? Who knows, we know how well Invoke Studios did with Dark Alliance...

Drew is an author he basically does the writing. He wrote for Star Wars and maybe Mass Effect iirc.

What product has archetype released successfully?
