Really? You don't think they've made big changes in classic lore in the last few years? Have you seen VRG? Spelljammer, Dragonlance, and Planescape are also changed (to admittedly a lesser extent). And that doesn't include significant monster lore changes that have been rolling along since Volo's, or possibly the Monster Manual.
VGR fixed a lot of mistakes made in the Black Box, and since it is a constantly changing dreamscape, it's lore is that the lore is constantly changing.

As for the others, they kept changes to an absolute minimum required to support the rules, leaning heavily into creative vaguery. Especially Dragonlance, which, instead of redoing the the original and fixing the vast amount of bad stuff in it, chickened out and went for a side-story, which is pretty pointless when the vast majority of players don't know the main story.

Strong disagree about the value of VRG as a Ravenloft product; my published remarks are quite clear on this. As a treatise on horror in D&D I admit it has merit. I don't see anything claiming that Ravenloft is a "constantly-changing dreamscape" where nothing really matters historically, outside VRG, and indeed the vast majority of existing Ravenloft material speaks against that. This seems more like post-hoc justification of your personal preference, which happens to be in ascendancy at the moment. In short, it reads as gloating.

I don't think they would try to squeeze the main story in one module though...
