D&D (2024) Playtest 8 Spell Discussion

One of the worst things about 5e is removing minimum stat requirements for spellcasting. It's not just lame, it's stupid for a wizard to be running around casting spells with a 3 int(or any intelligence penalty really).

Suggestion on how it recharges. The MM is, by RAW(if you're counting the MM and DMG as rules instead of what the game says), guidelines.
I also miss the stat requirements for spellcasting. It very cleanly explained the dearth of high level spellcasting in a world. Even if your a 7th level magic user (a very rare feat), you would also need a 14 int to cast 4th level spells (and even rarer feat). The combination of talent and training would be exceedingly rare, similar to a pro athlete (who normally must possess exceptional training AND raw natural talent).

Now on the DMG/MM... I am not familiar with the section of those books that calls them out as guidelines rather than rules of the game. Is there a passage in the intro perhaps I have overlooked?

So a quick look at the 5e DMG reveals it does, in fact, have rules for things not in the PHB. Here's one example:

Show me one real rule. Not something that interacts with real rules from the PHB, but a real rule.

You're joking right?

Awarding Inspiration.
Interaction with objects.
Chases.
Madness.
Poison and Disease.

None of that is covered in the PHB except in the most rudimentary way. Likewise there are monster rules like legendary actions, legendary resistance and random (d6) recharge that are never discussed in the PHB.

It has to rewind time by about a second. It doesn't make any sense that there would be a single instance or two where the game suddenly becomes narrativist. It would have made me much happier if they had just written it better and not involved a time rewind.
So you don't like the new redesign of many Reaction spells that trigger on a failure (Guidance and Resistance)? Because they trigger on a fail, and that failure can be reversed (if you don't think narratively). It sounds like these designs are pretty popular because the player only uses the Reaction/resource if they need to, and it is never a waste of time like if you could only use the Reaction in response to the effect being attempted. I know I don't like the idea of casting Resistance before rolling a saving throw, then rolling a 20. The Reaction feels like a waste of time/resources.

Not one of those is a rule unless it's in the optional rule section. All of the rest are explicitly guidelines.

That's why I liked the versions where you rolled and before you know if you succeed or fail, you get to decide based on the roll. So if you think you might fail with the roll of 12, cast resistance. Once you fail, you're done as far as I'm concerned.

It's the difference between your boss giving you some advice on being more efficient and giving you a work rule. A guideline is just advice or suggestion, it's not a rule.
Yeah. Distinction without difference. All of the rules in the PHB are guidelines. If I want to ban fighters or make all rolls on 3d6, I can.
