OSR How much does your party use Retainers, Henchmen and Strongholds?

That's what I did back in the day; once I had 7 players I split the game into two groups, and then three (there was some overlap between them, player-wise). But I've run modules that said they were designed for 6-8 PCs with groups as small as 3 with no trouble. I guess a lot just depends on...

OSR How much does your party use Retainers, Henchmen and Strongholds?

I've heard the same thing, but I've never seen it in actual play. And as someone who runs OSR (or at least OSR-adjacent) games, it's interesting to me that some folks keep insisting these huge parties are necessary.

D&D (2024) Where should optional rules go and why?

I think optional rules should be in the DMG, but I understand why some are int he PHB (specifically multiclassing, feats, and all the races listed after the halfling). I understand it just I don't like it, because so many people assume that everything in the PH is by default allowed/used in all...

OSR How much does your party use Retainers, Henchmen and Strongholds?

I have never used hirelings, henchpeople, etc in any game I've run or played in, dating back to when I started in 1993. Even in the last few years when I've been primarily using Dungeon Crawl Classics, it's just not a thing that seems worth the headache, bookkeeping, or taking the focus off the PCs.

D&D General So, how much did/do you use psionics?

Never played 1e by itself. I loved psionics in 2e - the proficiency/skill based mechanics and approach made it feel distinctly different from the more traditional wizard and cleric magic. We used it all the time in the 2e campaigns. Once 3.x made it just another spellcasting system I lost...

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

The Dungeon Crawl Classics Core Rulebook reignited my love to roleplaying games after getting burned out on official D&D stuff. So many issues people complain about in other RPGS (especially WotC-era D&D) are neatly and creatively solved in DCC, up to and including the explicit flexibility to...

    What's your age group?

I fall into both the 40-45 and the 45-50 groups, so I'm not sure how to vote.

Arc Dream Announces Black Company RPG

Not ever, as far as I know, and it's a damn shame. The world built around TunFaire is so much more interesting to me than that from the Black Company, from the way sorcery works to the really unusual species to the endless warning the Cantard.

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

My copy of the special Jennell Jaquays cover of By Mitra's Hand, Meet Thy Doom! arrived in the mail Friday, but that's misleading since I ordered it back in early February. But I backed the 10th Anniversary edition of Cats of Catthulhu on Kickstarter a few hours before its campaign ended, so...

    Single System Monogamy

I'm pretty sure I haven't played anything except Dungeon Crawl Classics in two years or so. It's not just the system, it's the approach of the game and the fantastic team that produces it.

D&D 3E/3.5 Ben Riggs shares Sunless Citadel sales numbers

I would love to see this comparison. I'm very much in the "I want shorter adventures I can string together, not a whole campaign" camp. But in practice I neither bought nor used the smaller adventures or anthologies when they were released, and I don't know anyone who did aside from collectors...

    D&D (2024) Level Zero

As a longtime gamer (30-ish years) running DCC exclusively for about three years now, I have to say that your statement matches my experience. Many people love starting play with a character that's fully developed and established, but lots of us - and it isn't just old timers IME - like starting...

What are you favorite RPG genres?

Weird fantasy/sword & sorcery is my baby, and they mesh really well together.
