The thread title says "2014 Character Options". I'm not sure what other options were published in 2014 besides the PH.
The thread title is a misnomer: the Tweet in the original post is referring to the pool of AL legal options, not the '14 PHB. The PHB '24 will abrogated the options that it presents, but otherwise options thst are AL Legal remain so. That is a much bigger pool than the '14 PHB.

How is that part even news? Like, when have AL characters ever not needed updating when options they’re built using receive changes (e.g. when there’s errata)? Granted, this is a bigger set of changes than has previously been seen in 5e, but we’ve had plenty of advance warning, was anyone really not expecting the majority of the PHB to be receiving such updates?

The news here, if there is any, would be that existing material that isn’t being reproduced in the 2024 PHB (which is to say, the handful of Wizard and Cleric subclasses in the 2014 PHB and all playable options outside the PHB) will be playable without needing any changes. And I’d argue that still shouldn’t be surprising, but there still seem to be a lot of people who are convinced the 2024 rules are actually going to be a new edition despite all evidence to the contrary. They’re the only reason this tweet isn’t a complete nothing-burger.
I was responding to an inaccurate statement that "nothing AL legal is being mothballed". Obviously anything AL legal for which a new version is released in 2024 will be mothballed.

In the same sense that anything AL legal gets mothballed when it receives errata, sure. As I said earlier, this seems to basically be getting treated like a particularly large round of errata.

To be clear, here is the text, and then what options this is changing from the AL guidebook

"Confirmed: #AdventurersLeague will continue with no fundamental changes when the 2024 rules release."

"Currently all pre-existing character options not present in 2024 PHB will still be allowed. Stuff updated in new PHB will likely require conversion."

So it actually sounds simple enough: if a rule or character option is in the 2024 PHB (and presumably whatever follows) then the previous version is superseded (regardless of where it is found) and you have to use the 2024 PHB version. That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

I will still be surprised if half orcs and half elves actually end up getting "erased" from D&D with the 2024 PHB.

Yeah, it's pretty straightforward, and expected. But "surely we won't be able to mix two Editions in AL!" was a big Discourse and few months back, so it is news.

The rules objects are gone, the narrative remains. They have a sidebar explaining how any PC can be or any Species mix. There may or may not be more ribbon flavor than the UA version in the final book, but I tend to doubt it

Also, half-orcs will most likely be gone and possibly half-elves as well, at least as specific options with their own distinct write-ups.
Not unless they explicitly replace them in the new PHB, which I doubt they'll do. And no, generic "mixed ancestry characters" rules don't do that.
If you read the original Tweet, this should also apy to options from SCAG, Xanathar's, Tasha's, Eberron, etc.
I still have trouble believing that some people were so convinced this wouldn't be the case.
And yes, Half-Elves and Haldlf-Orcs are fully out.
They aren't getting replaced, so not really.

Well, I mean there is no full write-up '24 replacement. Hopefully they get something s bit meatier in than the original UA, but honestly I hope it's just a ribbon sort of thing so that it doesn't become a field of.min-maxing either.
